My scooter is quite capable of keeping up with traffic (should it be illegally derestriceted) and therefore would be safe to ride in normal traffic flow however currently they are not. I believe in the case of 50kmh restricted vehicles, opening cycle lanes and bus lanes to them would be beneficial and improve safety regardless of whether this is to compensate for poor car drivers, I think most cyclists would agree that this is why cycle lanes exist in the first place. Most cycle lanes are deserted in my experience (SA) and under utilised it seems pathetic that cyclists should want to deny safety to other road users on the basis that they believe scooters would whizz past them! would they rather see "scooterists" injured or even killed because of their selfishness?
