Some interesting points there Julian. I definitely think Victoria's compulsory helmet laws are going to be the killer here.

No pun intended.

Vandalism has been a problem for a lot of bike share programs, however the problem has been greatly outweighed by the benefit of the program in most cities that have implemented the systems properly.

Unfortunately the Victorian Government as we can all see now have not implemented the system well in the slightest. Mucking up about every angle they possibly could.

I've done a bit of a analysis of the situation if you'd care to read.

It would be great if it works, as you’ve said I think the biggest issue will be helmets

Yeah I think this is easily going to be the killer. I read today that they're hoping initially people will bring their own helmets. If you had your own helmet wouldn't you just ride your own bike?

Is there a public liability waiver one enters into if you hire one of these bikes and the brakes ect fail and you are injured? Why does the name Slater and Gordon keep flashing in front of me rather than a stop sign?

Being the RACV I'm sure they would. It's an interesting point seeing as unless you have bicycle insurance on your own bike you've got to take civil action against someone to claim for damages. This is if they don't run/drive off before you recover.

It would be great if it works, as you've said I think the biggest issue will be helmets - Perhaps there should be some sort of exception to the rule when your riding within the city limits at relatively slow speeds (doubt the nannies would allow that to happen though)

Free bike hire seems pretty good in Bangkok

Adelaide has it

I think Brisbane are getting a hire system by JC Decaux

Here's a whole blog about bike sharing around the world
