You can’t help but just shake your head at stories like this. Swiss tourist Thomas (surname withheld) was cycling along the Princess Freeway heading towards the Great Ocean rode on what sounds like a holiday tour when some bogans hurled a full stubby of beear at him as he tried to cross an exit turnoff. The impact “broke his eye socket, nose, a tooth and prescription sunglasses and sent him flying from his bike. He lay on the bitumen verge of the Princes Freeway, blood pouring from the split in the flesh beside his nose.”

What a disgrace.

Leading Senior Constable Geoff Jolley mentioned that “a certain car had gone past him with some young fellas in it and then the next thing this guy was on the ground” so we can probably infer that it was some idiot P plater or his passenger trying to impress his equally idiot mates. I hope they’re sleeping well tonight.

Luckily for Thomas there was a witness who was able to help him and call for assistance. Unfortunately at this stage it doesn’t seem like there’s much hope of catching the idiots responsible but I’m hoping for an update in the future.

Sadly if the Bakr case is anything to go by, if this lot are caught they’ll probably just claim they were having stubby troubles and had to get rid of it or it might have exploded and will probably just get 6 hours suspended community service and a lollipop. I might be exaggerating a little bit, but I’m not the only one who thinks so. Freedom in a Fishbowl writes;

This really makes my blood boil and sickens my stomach. Although police have yet to find the assailant, you can pretty safely assume – from the action itself and the weapon of choice – that it was carried out by a low-life yobbo with a penchant for alcohol.

When, and if, this scumbag is finally caught, what a sad little slap on the wrist this bastard will no doubt receive from our flaccid judicial system.”

Australia already isn’t really known as being cycle friendly. Society believes driving a car is a human right and there’s a constant battle raging on the streets of our country between cyclists and motorists. Stories like this only seem to add fuel to the fire and it’s not just Australians who jump into the firefight. This is just an example of negative publicity we get as a country when something like this happens;

The bloke that did the round the world cycling record said Oz was the worst place he rode through for anti cyclist behavior.

He knew the risks, cycling in a third world country.

The number of related stories from Australia mean I’m really not looking to cycling places after the wife and I relocate later this year.

Sure we could just say ‘stuff em’ and ignore how cycling is viewed in Australia but honestly it wouldn’t take much to drag cycling’s reputation out of the gutter in Australia. Perhaps is the authorities actually treated cycling incidents as proper crimes (on both sides of the fence, idiots on cycles who ignore road rules i’m point at you) instead of just entertaining news pieces we might actually start to get somewhere with national acceptance of cycling in this country.

That or we could just jack up petrol to $5 a litre and watch what happens.
