Maybe I just got lucky off the bat but I never really had a problem or felt like my surgeon was being dishonest with me.

I imagine lying to your patients over time would trash your reputation as a Lasik surgeon would it not?

I think this list is good but it assumes the surgeon will be telling the truth when you ask them. The good surgeons will of course since they have nothing to hide and have good track records. But the guys that you really should be worried have every incentive to lie or exaggerate to you in order to cover up their bad track records.

A more effective and subtle way to gauge the doctor would be to check first if they want you to sign any legal waiver forms, like if there's any clauses that legally shield them from any potential negligence claims.

Also ask them about their success rate and complications rate, then right after ask them them if they're willing to perform corrective surgeries for free if something does happen.

A good surgeon should also be up to date with medical literature. So ask him about the different type of procedures like PRK, Lasik, Lasek, EPI-Lasik, the pros and cons, which one he recommends for and why.

What type of equipment he uses is also a factor, so check if they microkeratome blades or the new intraLase blades, ask him about the different software options he uses and why eg Aspheric, Wave front, tissue saving, etc.

There's also the indirect method, like if you happen to work for a large corporation, you can send an email around and ask you colleagues about their experiences and if they have any recommendations. I think you'd be surprised at the amount of responses you'd get.

Well I guess the question that needs to be asked then is can serial killers become accredited laser eye surgeons?

I'd like to think there's an accreditation licensing clause somewhere preventing this!

Waivers don’t always cover other aspects such as negligence…

True but given the entire procedure is like 15 minutes you'd have to be trying pretty hard to be negligent. Especially if you'd performed thousands of surgeries beforehand.

true but wouldn't it make sense for the medical accreditation boards should hold some more responsibility than the patient asking before treatment?

Wow, I would not have thought to ask if they had a history of being a serial killer… but wouldn’t they lie?

If you asked them in a professional capacity and they lied, I'm pretty sure that's not legal.

What about does your clinic and you have public liability and professional indemnity cover? I don’t want stray the argument but if something goes wrong you want to ensure you will be covered.

Given the money these guys make I doubt they don't. Having said that from memory I'm pretty sure I had to sign liability waivers before I had my Lasik procedure done.

one more thing to ask… “is your doctor a serial killer?”

uh...I'd just like to take this opportunity say that my eye surgeon was spectacularly awesome. Absolutely no complaints here!

...seriously please don't kill me if you're reading this!
