A 24 hour backflip wow.

As stupid idiotic as was for him to approve this law (seriously how did they not see the public backlash coming?) good on Atkinson for actually listening to the general public. I don't see why anyone in the general public would have any cause to support a law like this.

If someone could convince Conroy to take a leaf out of Atkinsons book we'd be set.

Identity Theft? Really? I wasn't aware that posters of the AdelaideNow website regularly had their credit cards compromised and fraudulent bank loans taken out in their names, just by posting political comments. There's no way forum providers, especially smaller ones, will be able to make the required changes to their sites. These sites will either have to disallow all political speech (self-censor) or risk being shut down by lawsuits (external censorship).

As to why Atkinson is pushing this law, it may be just to harass some recent political competitors, who are running against him on a policy of introducing an R18+ rating for video games. The rival group, Gamers4Croydon, is made up and supported by mostly younger adults who are more likely to discuss these matters on forums hosted in Australia and within the reach of this law. So it's not just ham-fisted censorship, but ham-fisted censorship aimed at his opponents. This is an incredibly slimy action and hopefully it gets the corrupt clown voted out come the election.
