Wikileaks' Theodor Reppe Raided: The government crackdown begins
Stephen Conroy told a press conference this morning that “people can continue to put up the lists if they are proud to do that”.
Meanwhile halfway across the world in Germany, Theodor Reppe, owner of the German mirror of Wikileaks (wikileaks.de), was the target of a police raid.
Hosting a copy of the list myself, I’m now expecting a knock on the door from the Australian Federal Police any moment.
Apart from owning the German domain wikileaks.de, Reppe also runs one of the most popular Tor servers in Germany. For those of you that don’t know Tor is an anonymous network which if you can connect to practically makes your internet traffic anonymous, albeit agonisingly slow.
At this stage it isn’t completely clear whether the raid was in response to Reppe’s involvement with Wikileaks or Tor. News.com.au are reporting that “A statement on Wikileaks’s website claims police were investigating the “distribution of pornographic material” and “discovery of evidence”.”
“Discovery of evidence”? What the hell does that even mean?
Wikileaks seem pretty sure that the raid was a result of the blacklists being leaked. In a press release today they stated;
“It is therefore not totally clear why the search was made, however Wikileaks, in its role as a defender of press freedoms, has published censorship lists for Australia, Thailand, Denmark and other countries that include links to pornographic sites”
Further to this they told News.com.au that
The raid is over the censorship lists, but which particular list, we can not be certain, although the Australian lists are the most recent and the most prominent due to their non-voluntary status.
I guess until the police release an official statement there’s nothing really to go on bar Wikileak’s claims but given how long Tor’s been around and the close proximity time wise of the Australian blacklist release, I’d say there’s more then a good chance that the raid they are related.
I thought I heard a knock at the door, I’ll be right ba-
