Parallel this with political powers directing banks etc. to freeze your access to operating your accounts for purely political purposes and you have the perfect view of life.

This is certainly the beginning of a totalitarian state. Too much government power for too long and now too much police power. This is a country to get out of.

I have nothing to hide that I know of, but there is nothing to stop police planting 'evidence' if it suits them to do so, given this law. Police ethics has little to do with it either. If a senior police officer insists that a less senior officer do so,he or she certainly would do so. I have no doubt of that. I have witnessed a 'plant' by police with my own eyes.

Yes, everyone, they WILL do it if it seems appropriate! What, happens if the government decides that certain religious groups or certain cultural groups are undesirable for the 'good of the nation' as Howard was fond of doing?

Remember he claimed that unemployment was always by choice and there were no poor people in Australia? That's because he thought he had starved them all out of existence!

He also said there were no people where he wanted to sell central australia to the Japanese for a nuclear waste dump. He thought the Indigenous Australians there were all dead, I assume. Well, searching their homes and planting whatever on them could be a good way to get them gone, wouldn't it! It would probably have been the next move had this law been in place then.

This example could happen to anyone in the government's way with this law in action, but of course it would start with the most vulnerable people.
