I’ve kind of given up trying to rationalise the fashion sense of girls in Taiwan. Part of me absolutely loves some of the outfits they come up with but then there’s the cringe worthy stuff too.

Don’t get me wrong, the girls are still hot it’s just they appear to have no idea what works and doesn’t work – when you’re skinny and short there are some things you just shouldn’t attempt.

Far be it from me to be the fashion police for the female population of Taiwan but from a guy perspective I know what I like and what I don’t like.

Hot girls wearing thick black glasses with no lenses ranks pretty high on my ‘DO NOT LIKE!’ list.

I’d seen the odd girl around Taiwan sporting these glasses. They tend to be big thick harry potter style glasses but without any lenses. Think the librarian/nerd type glasses people wear back home but without the functionality of actually have a prescription to need them.

It wasn’t until my recent trip to Spring Scream down in Kenting that I realised just how bad and common this atrocious fashion crime had gotten.

I took the photo on the right of a girl sporting the glasses down in Kenting. It was one of dozens of photos I could have taken. I seriously think about one in ten girls was walking around with these stupid glasses on.

It’s not that I have anything against a girl with glasses it’s just that for me I kind of don’t get the whole point. Asian girls as it is seem to go to extreme lengths to show off their eyes, as such fake eyelashes and eyeliner are massively popular over here.

There’s been a few mornings where I’ve woken and wondered what the hell I was looking at on the bedside table before realising her eyes weren’t as big the next day.

With that in mind it seems totally deconstructive to go and hide your eyes behind a pair of non-functional over sized black glasses.

Last week I was in a bar and locked eyes with a girl wearing a pair of these glasses. Flashing a smile I went over and we started to talk. She spoke fluent English so I figured I’d try my luck and try to get an answer as to why these girls are wearing them.

The answer I got was ‘no reason, just for fashion!’.

‘Oh come on. You have BEAUTIFUL eyes! Why would you want to go and hide them behind some silly glasses?!’

(yes you can totally get away with using lines like that with a straight face in Taiwan).

We discussed the lensless glasses topic and finally I managed to convince her she’d be better off without them. She was reluctant at first but eventually off they came.

I was right. She was pretty hot from the onset but the second she took them off it was like someone had slapped another ten points of attractiveness onto her. I was ecstatic and cheered her on.

I know changing an entire country’s fashion sense is too much of a task for one man but that night I felt like I’d done my bit in making Taiwan just that much more beautiful.

Here’s hoping she passed the message onto her friends.
