Partying at Spring Scream, Kenting Beach Taiwan

I’m slightly sunburnt, don’t know if I’m suffering from a residual hangover or if it’s all in my head, lost my sunglasses in the ocean, have a messenger bag full of sand, saw more hotpants, legs and bikini tops to last a lifetime and a camera full of photos to sort through.
Without a doubt, Kenting beach is the place to be in Taiwan over the long weekend in first week of April.
Situated in Pingtung County on the Hengchun Peninsula in the south of Taiwan and backed by a bank holiday which gives you Monday to recover on the trip home, Kenting gets taken over in the first week of April by seemingly the entire youth population of Taiwan.

Dubbed ‘Spring Scream’ (which is an actual event but more recently is the name the weekend has come to be known by), the music festival is well known island wide and features outdoor concerts, beach party raves and a bustling night market.
During the day there’s the eastern beach to relax on and go for a swim. Weather wise Kenting was perfect and sunny the three days I was there, I’m told it’s like this all year round. I suddenly understood why my boss told me she was worried I wouldn’t come back when I told her where I was going for the weekend.
The Music
Spring Scream is first and foremost a music festival. I didn’t make it to the actual ‘Spring Scream’ concert this year but I did go to the two Spring Wave events.
There’s basically two events for Spring Wave, a local one ‘Maobitou’ with Taiwanese bands and then a rave party ‘Hengchun’ featuring international DJs. We went to the rave one Hengchun and while Saturday night was pretty good, Sunday night wound up being pretty quiet crowd wise.
I have a sneaking suspicion most of the action is at the Maobitou event as I remember seeing a much bigger crowd there as our taxi flew past.
Drinks prices were ok, red bull and vodka set you back $100 TWD a cup and beer was $250 for 6 bottles. Not as cheap as 4 big cans for $100 TWD at the night market but certainly better then some of Taipei’s bars pushing nearly $200 TWD a bottle.
There was ample space at Spring Wave to do your thing, some might say a little bit too much space given the crowd size but whatever. Better more then less.
One amusing aspect of Spring Wave was the dancing girls on stage (you can see them in the first photo of this article). They’d come out at random intervals dressed in a bikini top and hot pants complete with a furry ‘tail’ and shake their stuff. Immediately when this happens there’s a surge of guys towards the stage and about 400 video cameras get whipped out.
When they finish their set and disappear again (they came out a few times during the night) there’s then the mass exodus of said guys back to wherever they were hiding before the girls came out.
The other amusing thing I saw was this statue on the right near one of the beer stalls. It was a massive big white baby, with one hand holding a beer and the other his penis.
I’m not exactly sure what the reference was there but I definitely think something got lost in translation! Oh and yeah, that’s my finger half in the photo… drinking + dancing + taking photos is asking for trouble.
A smaller crowd size at Spring Wave I think is probably due to the fact it isn’t near the main Kenting area. To get to the place we had to take a taxi ride that felt like it went on for 30 mins. It sort of feels like to get to Spring Wave you wind up taking a taxi that covers half the distance back to Kaohsiung.
Alright if the event is massive and everyone is staying nearby in tents or something but if you’re heading back to Kenting afterwards it’s a bit far.
As we found out on Sunday night, by far the better option seems to be the free beach party that kicks off on Kenting beach. There’s a dj setup, enough sound equipment to fill the beach, a bar behind the dj area and a stack of people to party with into the morning.
Not to mention the random fireworks that go off all night (no health and safety here, they are launched by randoms in the crowd!). If I did it over I’d probably have saved myself $1800 TWD and just given Spring Wave a miss and gone directly to the beach party.
Next year I’m going to make the effort to be better organised and attend the actual Spring Scream event. Everything I’ve read and heard about it makes it sound like something anyone in Taiwan should experience at least once.
The girls

Unless you’re in Taipei the rest of Taiwan is usually pretty conservative dress wise so it was awesome to see people let their hair down at Kenting. Unbelievable short mini skirts, hot pants featuring legs that went on forever and bikini tops were the go here and there’s enough of it to drive anyone crazy.
Then there’s the promotional girls who, while you do know they’re just there working at selling beers or whatever, are still nice to look at.
(Evidently my camera phone doesn’t work too well in night situations where there’s a lot of different light sources so getting clear photos was tough).
During the day the beaches provides plenty of eye candy opportunities too.
Accommodation
Not surprisingly the key to accommodation is planning well ahead. If you leave it to the last minute expect to be gauged by hotel/motel owners. I’ve heard that they deliberately keep a few rooms vacant and then put prices through the roof over the weekends.
Hotels and motels seem ok priced, we wound up paying $4000 TWD a night for a twin queen bed suite. The room had its own bathroom, was clean and had a balcony view so I can’t complain. The 11am unasked for loud wakeup banging on our door on Monday morning was a bit annoying though. Checkout wasn’t until 12pm so I have no idea what that was about.
There is of course hostel type accommodation but that of course comes at a price. Sharing a space with 10 other people isn’t my idea of a good night so I’d probably give it a miss. The most budget accommodation I saw was a big warehouse type building with mats and pillows lined up on the concrete ground. Think refugee camp. I guess alright to crash for the night but good luck getting any actual sleep!
One alternative to staying somewhere is to just crash on the beach. For obvious reasons the main Kenting party beach is out but the east beach which is a short walk away (in the McDonalds direction) was pretty good.
We had no accommodation for Saturday night and after Spring Wave just caught a taxi to the beach and crashed. I was in a tshirt so it was a bit chilly with a slight wind but it was only a few hours till the sun came out and all was good again.
There’s nothing quite like waking up on a beach and going for a swim at 8am after a night out with blue skies and the temperature at a warm 25-27 degrees C.
Just don’t do what I did and dive into the water with your sunglasses on. I jumped in with them on, came back up without them and then spent the next 20 minutes hunting around with my feet trying to find them. I have no idea where they went…
If the sun is too hot there’s beach umbrellas for hire along with plastic chairs. The guy selling them just runs over and whacks up the umbrella for you. I’m not too sure on the price though (somebody hired one out for us while I was asleep) but I imagine it’s cheap. For entertainment there’s also jetskis and of course the ocean itself which was sparkling clean.
I took this photo at around lunch time when it was in full swing. It does look a bit cloudy but the temperature must have been around 30 at this stage. Overnight the beach was quiet and till around 9:30am or so we pretty much had the area we slept in to ourselves. Going by the photo we slept on the otherside of the main clump of umbrellas.
Having gone to the rave party at the other beach closer to the main area of Kenting, I’d advise not trying to sleep there. Simply put the beach area was trashed. Which I guess is what you’d expect after an entire night of massive crowds.
Next year I’m definitely returning and will make the effort to hit up the actual Spring Scream event itself. Not sure if we’ll go for two nights on the beach (warm showers were nice at the hotel) but one night is definitely an option.
Come Tuesday it’s pretty much back to business as usual but for at least one weekend it was nice to see Taiwan let its hair down. I don’t know where exactly everyone came from but if all it takes is a beach party to get people to relax here in huge crowds then Taiwan needs to do it more often.

whats the water like at the beaches? is it clean?

The water at Kenting was awesome, nice and blue. Beach itself was clean. The sand was lovely too. My picture makes it look a bit crowded but we had no problems with space on the beach.
No jellyfish or seaweed, just nice white sand and blue water as far as the eye could see. Have to be a bit careful with the jetskis though if you go out deep enough as there doesn’t seem to be any regulation as to where people can ride them.
Mind you this is at the east beach, the one that didn’t have any dance parties overnight. I’d hate to think about the state of the other ‘foreigner’ beach that was closer to the nightmarket after the dance party hosted there. It was bad enough walking around trying to not to trip on makeshift bonfires and piles of bottles during the party let alone afterwards.
I hope Kenting’s cleanup crews are good!

Hi there, just curious. You heading down to kenting next year??
December 21st, 2010 at 4:49 am ozsoapbox(Quote)
Gday Wilson. April is still a ways off so not sure at this stage. Barring anything else majorly interesting happening though I’ll probably head down again.
Might try and be a bit better organised this time seeing as I’ll know what to expect

Hi there, really great to see your reply.
Was really looking for information about the spring scream festival and your blog really provided very useful information.
Im actually singaporean but half taiwanese, my mum is taiwanese. though i go back every year i never had a chance to go back during april to attend the festival. so this will be my first time too. i heard its really difficult to get a room during the festival. is it true?
i know there is a rock band party and a rave party?? is there a difference??
thanks so much for your help!!

Sounds cool! Spring Scream really is a memorable experience, especially if your familiar with the oft reserved and repressive culture that exists in Taiwan.
Our group booked a hotel room a few weeks out from the event and that was hard enough (yeah we paid through the nose for it too). There were single bed dorms (think big warehouse with mats on the ground for backpackers) set up but I’ve got no idea on the availability or price unfortunately.
A ton of people go so it’d be worth investigation your options early. Worst comes to absolute worst it’s warm enough to sleep on the beach but if it rains you’d be stuffed.
If we’re talking about the actual Spring Scream event I’d imagine it’s purely a music thing to cater for different tastes. Rock is rock and rave is dancey music. Event wise I imagine they’d be on at the same time and not too hard to work your way between the two.
No worries mate, glad to help.

Hey thanks so much for your help mate!! Happy new year!!
My friends and I are trying to figure the rooms now since its only 3 months to the event.
Oh yea, you mentioned that there were 2 events?
spring wave and spring scream?? are there any difference?? which one is better?? do we need tickets??
Thanks again mate!!
January 2nd, 2011 at 6:58 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Yeah now would be a good time to book stuff as you might get rooms at normal rates.
There’s more then two events on, ‘Spring Scream’ is the name of the festival as well as the major event. Then you’ve got smaller events around the area on at the same time such at ‘Spring Wave’ and a few others. There’s also a free party at the beach which is easy enough to get to although doesn’t have any live music (just a DJ).
I didn’t make the actual Spring Scream concert event last year so if I go this year (still undecided) that’ll be what I’ll be getting tickets too. Oh and yeah you do need tickets to the events. They can be prepurchased or purchased in Kenting (you risk them selling out though) or there’s usually scalpers out the front of the events openly selling tickets.
Dunno about the authenticity of scalped tickets though nor the prices as we prebooked our tickets to Spring Wave.
In terms of what’s btter I’d probably stick to getting tickets to the actual ‘Spring Scream’ concert. It’s the largest, has the most variety and will be where most of the people are at.

yeah thanks so much mate!!
really hope you can make it to this year’s spring scream.
we can hang out together in kenting.
are you working in taiwan??
so last year, you just booked the tickets to spring wave and not the main spring scream event??
you mentioned the second night of the spring wave wasnt as great?
hows the free beach party? are there alot of people?
and are there party venues close to each other?
we are looking at the hotels now but i am not sure which hotel to book as there isnt any details of the exact location of the party yet right??
or is it the same location every year??
you have facebook??

Yeah I’m working as a teacher, I’ll probably decide about Kenting in the next month or so.
Last year we booked tickets to Spring Wave and collected them from a box office in Kenting. Second night wasn’t as busy as the first which was a bit of a downer. Given that a lot moe people go to the main Spring Scream event I’m assuming it’s much busier.
The beach party was where we wound up on the second night and was much more lively then Spring Wave. The Spring Wave venue was a twenty or so minute taxi ride down the main road whereas the beach party was bang in the middle of the main night market street.
The party venues tend to be a bit of a ways out from the main area (you wouldn’t want to walk to Spring Wave from the main Kenting area) but there’s plenty of taxis around. The beach party was well within walking distance from the main street hotels and accommodation.
Last year Spring Scream was held in the massive forest bit I think, I imagine it’d be the same this year.
Oh and no Facebook for me
.

Thanks so much mate!!
So have you made a decision yet??
i thought the spring wave would be more massive than the spring scream given the number of stars performing on stage.
or was the cast performing less popular on the second night??
yea actually our plan is to just go there and get wasted in kending.. the music there is actually secondary to us..
do you think renting scooters would be advisable??
when did you book your accomadation last year??
do you have any recommendations??
January 10th, 2011 at 2:13 am ozsoapbox(Quote)
Not yet. Probably wont till a month or so before. We’ve got Chinese New Year to plan first.
I think there might be some confusion between the two events, Spring Scream has way more artists performing then Spring Wave did and the area is much bigger. Spring Wave just had the one stage with only 3-4 acts on each night.
I’d say the second night wasn’t as popular not due to the lineup but more that people had to get back home for work the next day or couldn’t find acommodation to spend another night in Kenting.
Might be worth just hanging about at the beach party then. You can hit up the night market for dinner before the beach party kicks off each night.
During the day yeah why not. There’s a ton of people around though so I’d be careful about where you’re parking them if you hire them for the weekend.
Then there’s also the issue of finding a place to rent to you without a license, shouldn’t be too difficult but remember Taiwan is no Thailand. You’ll at a minimum need some sort of ID and even then there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to rent a scooter out.
We left it late last year and only started looking a few weeks before Spring Scream itself. If you get the chance a room hostel might be worth it otherwise try your luck with the hotels.
Make sure you’ve got someone who speaks Mandarin ringing around though as you’ve most likely got less chance of getting ripped off then. Also I imagine some places might not want to rent out to outsiders (more chance of trashing the room, being a nuisance etc.).

Hey Mate!
From Singapore & was just back from Taiwan in late Jan 11 & had booked for April 11 to experience Spring Scream.
As such, had been searching over the net for information on Spring Scream. Language & wordings for Singaporean. Chinese is not a problem however i do encounter problem with purchasing the ticket. There is no e-ticket or the 3rd party vendor indixxxx was not available for me.
1) How should i purchase the ticket?
2) My arrival is Sat April 2nd, should i go for Sat or Sun is just as good?
3) I prefer to find an accomodation, dont really feel safe or good sleeping by the beach. Any recommendation?
Cheers,
Hope to see you guys around, will be travelling alone again this time. Anyone needs mandarin translator?

If you can speak and read Chinese then you’re miles infront of most of us. For accommodation I’d reccomend searching for some kind of directory and simply calling around, from memory that’s what we did last year.
As for purchasing the ticket, try calling up the vendor and seeing what they reccommend. There’s is a box office in Kenting itself so availablility pending you should be able to purchase and pick up a ticket there.
Oh and worst comes to worst the beach is quite safe… just dont’ be running around with a laptop or flashy gadgets hanging out of your pocket.

Thanks for the swift reply! Celebrating Chinese New Year and now back to business which only now then i realise i should check back here on your reply.
During the Chinese New Year period, i suddenly recall my insurance agent happens to be a Taiwanese working in Singapore but she mentioned she’s going back to PingTung to celebrate the festive with her family. Immediately sent her sms & facebook & she got the ticket for me!
I will be going on the Sunday 3rd April. On the 2nd will stay a night at Taipei.
Still goggling around to see which hotel, but i reckon not much difference. Oh yes i will be carrying a laptop around ! Hahaha

Hey mate I m Eric from Hong Kong!!
I just bought the 4 day pass for the spring scream event. Got my plane ticket, hotel, ride to pick up from airport!! seems like everything sorted out.
But the thing is should I be also buying tickets for spring wave?? since u said is quite far away…so is it worth going?? and about the rave party…is it only wave got rave party or scream got its rave party, too!! I want some good techno music!!
Thank you very much mate!! Now just needa pump some iron for the ladies!! lol
peace mate!! =)
March 16th, 2011 at 11:51 am ozsoapbox(Quote)
Sounds good!
If you’ve already got tickets for Spring Scream I wouldn’t bother, just enjoy Spring Scream as apparently it’s huge.
I imagine there’s a techno section within Spring Scream itself, enough Taiwanese people seem to like dance music for there to be so.
