I’ve never really quite understood the assertion that Taiwanese society is rooted in traditionalism. I mean what, outside of doing what your parents say till they die, paying them money when you start working and then repeating the process when you have kids yourself, there’s not really all that much more to it.
The same bullshit that goes on everywhere else in the world goes on in Taiwan, only due to the language barrier and selective reporting in Mandarin, you’re far less likely to hear or read about it.
Occasionally though some news does get through, and today we explore one such example. Under the banner of a “traditional Taiwan”, clerics representing several religious organisations came together to pontificate on the holiest of homophobic smackdowns.
And forget about adhering political correctness, human right and all other rubbish, this was a meeting of the minds to rival any conglomerate of crazy.
Calling themselves the “Taiwan Religious Groups Caring Family Alliance”, religious clerics set out yesterday to seek signatures for a petition against same-sex marriage.
You see, if “the gays” are granted permission to marry, apparently Taiwan as we know it is fucked.
Chang Chuan-feng (張全鋒), the vice president of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, said that advocates for legalizing same-sex marriage are part of an international movement toward sexual liberation and promiscuity.
“Traditional morality will disappear after the proposal to legalize same-sex marriage is passed by legislators,” Chang said.
Traditional morality you say? What does that even mean? Apple Daily and other tabloids are out there every day reporting any number of diabolically scandalous stories completely devoid of any sense of traditional morality. You think gay marriage is going to change anything?
the Taiwan Alliance to Promote Civil Partnership Rights is fighting for family diversity,” Chang said. “But once same-sex marriage is legalized, there will be more and more homosexual people.”
“In the future, children will receive an education that teaches them homosexuality is fine, which will bring severe consequences.”
Chang said that if the amendment is passed, it will lead to the legalization of adultery and incest, as well as promote promiscuity.
Holy shit. Adultery and incest, this guy is serious?
For starters, the illegalisation of adultery is a farce. The genitals of consenting adults and who they sleep with is entirely their own business. Incest? Yeah, cause two same-sex consenting adults getting married totally equals incest.
Unification Church Taiwan vice president Paul Chang (張全鋒) even took it one step further, declaring
Legalizing same-sex marriage is a reverse tide in the international movement for sexual liberation, it is not progressive, rather, it is a downward step that will lead to the collapse of civilizations.
Legalizing same-sex marriage is legalizing adultery, incest and group sex. The gay rights movement seeks to create more homosexuals through group sex.
Right, cuz eighteen straight Taiwanese guys never boarded a public train and proceeded to have an orgy with a lone female participant. That never happened.
And even if it did happen (it did), it’d be ok cause they were totally like y’know, probably just trying to create more straight people.
We must understand how dangerous it is, because once such legislation is passed, our children will be taught at school that it is OK to be gay, which will lead to very serious consequences for our society.
Oh noes, not the children! Who will teach them it’s not ok to be gay?
Chang also spoke against allowing gay couples to adopt children, saying that children raised in same-sex families are more likely to become criminals or victims of sexual violence.
It’s not often that I’m left speechless… but there you have it. Words simply cannot accurately convey the level of utter stupidity Paul Chang seemingly posseses endless amounts of.
Representing Buddhists at this venerable meeting of morons was Shih Ching-yao (釋淨耀). His take?
Religious leaders were speaking out because they “feel it is our responsibility to stand up for family values and the stability of our society.
The family is the basis of social stability. How will we able to maintain social stability if people of the same sex could form a family?
It is also the duty of a family to produce children. People should not sacrifice this important moral value just because they want to enjoy sex.
So there you have it all you childless married couples out there. You have completely failed at life.
Oh and according to Shuh’s Buddhist logic, so has Taiwan as a nation. Apart from a slight rebound last year (the year of the Dragon), it’s no secret that Taiwan’s birthrate is amongst the lowest in the world.
Marriage rates in Taiwan are also down the toilet, showing steadily decline over the last few years.
But yeah, where’s my pitchfork? Obviously “the gays” and their gay marriage are to blame.
Oh and how about a dose of racist superiority thrown into the religious rant, just for good measure:
Many Western countries have legalized same-sex marriage, but no Asian country has done so,” Shih said.
“I hope that Taiwan will learn from countries upholding the right values, not from those who follow bad values”.
Asian = good, west = bad. You heard it here in Taiwan first folks, based purely on the deciding factor of the legalisation gay marriage.
“Gay marriage is alright for the west and their bad values, but we’re Asian. You can fuck right off with that human rights and equality shit.”
Despite Shih’s delicious display of deadshit doltery above, my favourite quote from him would still probably have to be this:
Traditional moral standards have ensured the stability of Chinese society for thousands of years, and that a few sexually liberated people should not be allowed to weaken this foundation.
Chinese society, say what? Oh and trying to pass off modern day Chinese society against “thousands of years”? Yeah let’s not pretend modern-day Chinese society is anything like what it has been over the last few thousand years.
Go try to peddle your religion over in modern Chinese society and let us know how that works out for you.
The Lutherans couldn’t help themselves either, chiming in with
Monogamy is the form of marriage best suited for society, and that legalizing same-sex marriage would be tantamount to encouraging more people to become homosexual, in turn destroying the foundation of monogamy.
Cuz all homos are nothing more than sex-crazy animals incapable of a monogamous relationship, right?
Man, it’s not often that I’d even bother to take the ramblings of religious nutjobs seriously… but when they team up like a troupe of psychotic Power Rangers it’s hard not too.
So horrendously brazen are their arguments against gay marriage that they pretty much read like something you’d find in a “how to troll “the gays” handbook”.
Only these guys are apparently serious… and looking for Taiwanese society to support them.
Woe for the state of religion in Taiwan.
