I’m not really a big fan of seafood to begin with. Seafood costs more then beef and chicken and is usually fiddly or riddled with bones. Call me lazy old fashioned but I don’t want to spend longer eating my food then somebody took to prepare it.

Especially if that person is me.

Having said that the inescapable union between Asia and seafood is kind of hard to avoid when your live smack in the middle of it.

Taiwan luckily still seems to mostly favour beef and chicken but that still wasn’t enough to stop me running into weird arse seafood here.

I was walking down the aisle of an A-mart a few weeks back and just randomly sitting in the fresh produce section was this mouth watering tray of… what appears to be some sort of sea shells.

I picked them up and had a smell and a strong salty sea water smell with a hint of vinegar hit my nostrils. I asked the girl I was with what the deal was and she confirmed they were out of the ocean.

Apparently they are somewhat of a delicacy here and I later found out are called ‘shou geo luo’ (note: this is my phonetic translation, not the correct pinyin name).

You eat shou geo luo cold, taking one of the tiny shells and sucking out what’s inside. Sort of like an oyster but totally gross.

Well actually oysters are pretty gross too.

In any case definitely a pass from me. You won’t see me going near stuff I’d usually buy for my goldfish to eat any time soon.
