Toffee covered strawberries – Diabetes ahoy!
I’m a great lover of sugar so me and Taiwan get a long just great. Everywhere I turn here there’s either delicious fatty meats or heart attack inducing sugar rushes.
I’m currently cycling about 150km a week to keep it all off, so far it’s working. I’d dread to think what’d happen if I ever stopped though.
Toffee covered strawberries are something I’ve seen all over Taiwan and I’d been meaning to try them out since forever. One afternoon I was walking through downtown Taipei and decided now was as good a time as ever.

The strawberries come three a piece and are mounted on a stick. Despite the watery look in the photo the toffee is actually set and firm, although it does melt rather quickly.
Taste wise this is one of the biggest sugar rushes I’ve had over here yet (1L of chocolate milk tea slammed down after a bicycle run comes a close second). The strawberries are the juiciest and sweetest I’ve ever tasted and the toffee is just icing on the cake. Taste wise the toffee is like what we get on Toffee apples back home.
Infact toffee covered strawberries is kinda the same idea except you get a whole lot more toffee instead of the thin layer on toffee apples.
If you’ve got a sweet spot for sugar toffee covered strawberries will blow your mind. Price wise though they’re a bit of a downer. Coming in at $40 TWD ($1.40 AUD) they’re definitely on the expensive side.
A bowl of beef noodles can be had in Taiwan for $60 TWD and back home I’m sure toffee apples were around the $1.50 AUD mark. Coupled with being so ridiculously easy to finish in half a second toffee covered strawberries aren’t that great value for money.
If you’re a sugar addict like me though, despite the cost the sweet, sweet taste will still make you come back for more…

They sound fantastic. I’m going to have to make some toffee to go with my non-existent strawberries. Seriously, though when we’ve finished the chocolate brownies I made yesterday I’ll find some strawberries. Yummo.

$40 TWD sounds expensive for those, you sure they’re not ripping you off?

@Suzie
Ahh lucky Australia. You guys are just getting into strawberry season now yeah?
Taiwan’s just wrapped up its strawberry season… now it’s time to bring on the watermelons!
Unfortunately when I toss up between watermelon juice and chocolate milk tea I still find myself going for the milk tea!
@Yi
I doubt it, my boss bought them from memory as she had a stick too.
Mind you this was downtown Taipei, I imagine they’re cheaper elsewhere.
