Moving to Taiwan – The future of OzSoapbox
Regular readers of OzSoapbox have probably noticed I’ve started making reference to moving overseas. A few months ago I started to feel restless after a relationship breakdown and decided I’d had enough of Melbourne, it was time for a change.
I’ve never really had the travel bug having lived in Melbourne my entire life so I figured that while I had the urge I might as well act on it. I haven’t had many times in my life when (pets aside) I didn’t have any strings attached and I was in a financial position to move myself.
I’ve chosen Taiwan for a number of reasons (earthquakes and tsunamis aside) and plan to move there over the next month or so. So what’s happening to OzSoapbox?
For the most part I don’t expect much to change. I’m going to try and avoid the travel blog route, as interesting as diving into a different culture is going to be I think I’d get bored of solely writing about my experiences overseas. My hearts always going to be in Australian current events.
What I think will realistically happen is I’ll probably wind down some of the other hobby topics I’ve got and focus more on Taiwan on the weekends. For example my goldfish posts will probably become sparse. Having said that goldfish are pretty big in Asia but I won’t have an aquarium setup (at least not initially) to keep me into it so it will drop off a little.
I am taking the Long Haul Trucker to the streets of Taiwan so that should be interesting, if for nothing else then THEY DRIVE ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD! I plan to keep the cycling component of OzSoapbox strong, with technical and cycling experiences in Taiwan articles.
I’m going to be teaching English initially so I’ll write a bit about that too and then I think once I’m over there settle on food and quirky things I come across. Apparently it’s cheaper to eat out all the time and there’s a whole new country of food for me to explore (I love Asian food) so I should have plenty to write about.
I’m pretty easy going but I can’t escape the fact I was brought up here in Australia and there’s most likely going to be some cultural clashes – which I’m sure will be frustratingly hilarious (to everyone except me), so expect a little of that too.
I don’t know if it will be a struggle to keep a balance between Australian current events and Taiwan but I’ll see how it goes. I really want to avoid starting a separate blog as writing for OzSoapbox keeps me quite occupied as it is. I’m more of a one thing type person anyway, one fishtank, one bicycle etc.
Some of you might get a bit bored with the Taiwan stuff which is understandable in which case I’ll thank you in advance for reading thus far. I imagine with the slight focus change I’ll continue to attract new readers too which hopefully balances things out.
One thing I won’t be able to do which I’ll miss is the hyperlocal Melbourne stuff, for example no more free parking at Costco type posts.
Although English seems to be pretty prevalent over in Taiwan the last thing I want is OzSoapbox to turn into a ghost town, at times this might be my only contact with the English speaking world!
At this stage I’m set to leave Australia sometime in November. I’ve wrapped up work, my pets and sorted out my luggage so there’s not much else to do other then to organise a visa and sort out my initial employment over there.
I’d like to thank you all for reading OzSoapbox and hope that I can continue to provide entertaining reading while I enter this next stage of my life. Here’s to change.

You have had some great posts. Best of luck with your new travels.

Have a fantastic time. I am going to hang around and keep reading your stuff. It will be fascinating to hear about the living and lifestyle changes you will have to make too.

What you gonna do in Taiwan? I’ve a friend who’s teaching English there atm. Do you even speak Mandarin?
October 5th, 2009 at 6:00 pm Elle(Quote)
Oh right teaching English, sorry missed that bit.
October 5th, 2009 at 6:11 pm motiv8dan(Quote)
i think this will make for interesting reading….
October 5th, 2009 at 6:16 pm Yi(Quote)
2 things i want you to report from taiwan. Food + Women!
October 5th, 2009 at 11:54 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Thanks for the encouragement guys.
Not a word yet, but I am going to get stuck into it once I’m settled over there. I also have to master chopsticks before I leave too! Currently I can hold them but I have no strength or precision when trying to pick things up, it’s frustratingly annoying.
Hey Elle, can your friend confirm the weather there? I keep reading stuff like this and wonder what exactly I’m walking into. Typhoons… earthquakes, and I thought Melbourne had crazy weather!
Food should be easy enough to do. Women on the other hand… I hope your happy with written reports as I imagine Taiwanese women won’t be any more impressed with me taking camera phone photos then girls here would!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:46 pm Erica(Quote)
It’s not gonna be easy for you mate. Just bear in mind that TW uses American English so im not sure how useful our Aussie English is going to be over there. As for women, I can assure you that 99% of TW girls suffer from anorexia and went through some sort of cosmetic surgery. Not a single natural beauty from TW I’d say. Just don’t have your hope too high!
Best of luck with your new experience anyway!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:49 pm Erica(Quote)
Oh and the weather is usually fairly humid. Lots of typhoons during summer. Usually goes down to 10 Celsius in Winter. Hope that helps.
October 6th, 2009 at 12:54 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Thanks for the insight Erica. When you say cosmetic surgery are we talking just skin whitening stuff that half of Asia seems crazy about or full on ‘hey doc give me breasts!’ to counter the stereotypical AAA Asian breast size type surgeries?
I’m not a big fan of the plastic look so I hope they’re not too into the facial reconstruction stuff etc.
As for the weather, typhoons aside I’m a big fan of the warmer climate even if it’s humid so I should enjoy that. Really looking forward to it!
October 6th, 2009 at 12:58 pm Erica(Quote)
Na I’d say mostly the ‘hey doc give me a high cheekbone, tall nose, huge sexy mouth and GG breasts’ type of surgery. Have you any TW female friends? They usually are thin as with perfect face shape and best body ever. You’d wonder wouldn’t u.
May I ask why Taiwan? Why not China or elsewhere in Asia?
October 6th, 2009 at 1:17 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Fair enough, so long as it’s not too obvious I don’t mind.
I don’t have any Taiwanese friends but I did go out with a girl from Taiwan on and off for about a year. If she was anything to go by then yeah, hot.
I chose Taiwan as I was going to go there anyway last year, they teach english from grade 4 and the cost of living/food is pretty low and I want to learn Mandarin.
As for the other Asian countries:
China – Government I probably won’t get a long with.
Malaysia – Crazy muslims
Thailand – Too many drunk Australian tourists, I don’t plan on hanging out at ‘western’ bars in Taiwan. I’m going to just throw myself in the deep end and see how I go.
Singapore – Crazy muslims
Vietnam – Don’t like the sound of the language and it’s a bit too 3rd world for me.
Japan – No interest in learning Japanese and the cost of living is high
Korea – Nothing against Korea really.. apart from preferring to learn Mandarin over Korean.
Indonesia – Crazy muslims
Phillipines – No real interest to travel there.
October 6th, 2009 at 1:27 pm Erica(Quote)
haha good for you there’s not at all crazy muslims in TW.
Me being subjective, I reckon all TW girls look EXACTLY the same. Everything’s way too perfect I’d say.
Deep end ay? You’d probably want to explore the more ‘country’ side of TW then. Which city are you planning to stay?
October 6th, 2009 at 2:07 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
When you say you being subjective are you frm Taiwan?
I’m taking my bike with me so I do plan on doing some touring around the country but that’ll come later. Intitially I just want to settle down and become familiar with my immediate surroundings.
At this stage I’m looking at Taipei because English most prevailent there but any of the main cities on the west coast are ok I guess. Later on once I’ve got a grip on Mandarin I might go exploring some of the more rural areas.
As my Mandarin develops hopefully I can get work other then just relying on teaching English.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:15 pm Erica(Quote)
Being subjective = I know a whole lot about TW.
You will enjoy riding there, particualy near the coast. Are you planning to settle there for good? Hopefully this site won’t end up in Mandarin lol
October 6th, 2009 at 2:25 pm J(Quote)
Hi Ozsoapbox,
I stumbled across your website a few months ago searching for costco au related articles on the web and had excellent time reading your blog! I can’t say that I’ve read all the articles but the ones I’ve read are very interesting.
It’s been a while since I last visited and I was surprised to see that you are moving to Taiwan to teach English! I am a Taiwanese myself but grew up in Melb.
Just thought that if you need any information on Taiwan I might be able to offer. Language, food, culture etc.
Taipei will be a good spot to start.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:26 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Ah cool, out of curiosity are you living there at the moment or elsewhere? Don’t worry I’m not going to ask you to play tour guide or anything lol.
Pretty much. I don’t really have any plans to come back to Australia in the near future at this stage but I’ll visit family and eventually have to sell off my car etc. Having said that the future holds what the future holds.
I think that’s a pretty safe bet, I’m not about to start writing for a mandarin audience anytime soon
.
October 6th, 2009 at 2:35 pm Erica(Quote)
No not at the moment but in the past I have lived there, can def give you some tips on things. I suppose if you meet another charming plastic fantastic TW girl then you really don’t have any reason to get back to Australia lol.
October 6th, 2009 at 4:21 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Thanks for the offer J! I think once I get over there and start writing I’ll really appreciate the help (and explanations!) from people who are familiar with Taiwan and have lived or grew up in Australia.
Glad to hear your enjoying the articles here, I’ll keep writing if people keep reading!
Thanks Erica
. Although I’m not actively looking whatever happens over there happens.
Meanwhile I’ve added “investigate the ‘plastic girl scene’” to my list of blog topics to write about once I’ve had a chance to suss it out.
October 6th, 2009 at 7:00 pm Elle(Quote)
Hey Oz, yeah..I can ask me friend for ya.
Lol hey M’sia isn’t all that “crazy muslims” I was from there. and I ain’t a muslim…maybe a crazy chink..

TW girls loves western guys taking photo/video. i mean just look at Mordeth13 (Canadian guy living in TW), he is super popular with the TW ladies. PS: Mordeth is awsome.

Most Taiwanese won’t mind having their photos taken. If you ask politely, I think they’ll even be delighted to take photos with you (plus a lot of shy giggles).
As for 99% TW girl’s are plastic, I have to say that’s over exaggerating. But a lot of them do wear overly done makeups.
October 6th, 2009 at 9:33 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Lol that park pole dancer is hilarious.
October 7th, 2009 at 11:05 am Erica(Quote)
hey oz check this out!
facebook link
Look similar to the girl you used to date? (plastic fantastic?!) lol
October 7th, 2009 at 11:24 am ozsoapbox(Quote)
Work blocks facebook, I’ll check it out when I get home. The girl I was with hadn’t had any work done though!
October 7th, 2009 at 11:43 am Friggin Loon(Quote)
Good luck with the change of scenery. I did something similar when I was in my 20′s. Packed up and moved to Japan for two years. Just remember the first few weeks are the hardest, so don’t go “What the hell am I doing here?” just soak up the challenge. Looking forward to reading your Taiwanese posts.
October 7th, 2009 at 1:28 pm Erica(Quote)
That’s what she said? lol. Have a look at the sites first and let me know what you think. BTW, does that girl know your moving to TW? Perhaps get some info from her.
P.S. looking forward to your post on “investigate the ‘plastic girl scene’”.

try this oz.
October 7th, 2009 at 5:30 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
EWWWWWWWWW No she didn’t look anything like them.
They seem to be US asians? Half of them look like they’re from Thailand or something. What are the entry requirements for Miss Taiwan World, just to be from Asia?
October 7th, 2009 at 10:04 pm J(Quote)
Isn’t proving it with your own eyes more important than getting convinced by internet sources that TW girls are “plastic”?
By the way, the links are of Miss Taiwan in US. The entry requirement are (a.) Single female. (b.) Age: 17 through 30. (c.) At least 12.5% (1/8) Taiwanese ancestry. (d.) No
requirement on birthplace or residency.
So you don’t have to be a complete Taiwanese to enter.
October 7th, 2009 at 10:38 pm Erica(Quote)
try google images ‘miss taiwan’ or ‘taiwanese girls’. Was the girl u dated 100% taiwanese?
October 7th, 2009 at 11:06 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Definitely, regardless of images on the internet I’m still going. Besides, it’s not just about girls there’s all the other stuff too.
Learning the language, seeing the sights, adapting to a different culture and surroundings and the food and so forth. I’m looking forward to a lot of things.
Not 100% but close enough, she had some japanese and dutch too.
I’m not in contact with her anymore unfortunately, she literally vanished.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:23 am J(Quote)
Excellent attitude you’ve got there.
I believe you will have a great time with that sort of attitute where ever you travel.
You probably can see my email address floating up there somewhere. If you ever need any thing (pre-departure information etc) please do drop me a mail and I’ll be more than happy to help!
By the way, except for the Chinese who moved to Taiwan with KMT in 1945, a lot of the original Taiwanese are a mixture of Southern Chinese, Aborigines, Japanese and Dutch. I can still faintly remember my grandmother on my father’s side had almost grey eyes.
October 8th, 2009 at 4:56 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
Thanks. I think it’s due to knowing I plan to live there, so I guess there’s a different mindset of just visiting.
If you’re just visiting you want to cram in as much food, women and sightseeing as possible I guess. I can afford to take things slower and appreciate it more.
October 8th, 2009 at 5:51 pm Erica(Quote)
Sorry to hear that mate. Are you planning to find her in TW? Best of luck.
October 8th, 2009 at 6:34 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
The last thing she told me was to forget about her and that she didn’t want to talk about it. Then she resigned from work and vanished. To be honest I have no idea where she is, I swung by her house and there were no cars there and it looked empty.
She knows how to contact me so I guess she has her reasons for dissappearing and not wanting me to know anything, and I’m not about to start stalking people.
I was worried sick for a few months and still I’ve got that nagging question of ‘what happened’ but there’s only so much you can do. Writing on OzSoapbox got me through a lot of it.
I figure if she ever wants to contact me she knows how to so I’ll just try and move on. I had the money set aside to go to Taiwan last year and I hadn’t spent it so I figured why not make it interesting and move there.
Who knows why people do the things they do.
October 8th, 2009 at 7:56 pm Erica(Quote)
What a story! Does she read your blog? If she does hope she will contact you soon.
October 8th, 2009 at 10:20 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
She knows about it and was reading it before she vanished, now I have no idea.
I’m not holding my breath over her contacting me, generally you don’t totally vanish unless there’s a good reason to.
Sidenote: I’m sitting here doing the TEFL course and man is it draining, I haven’t had to think about this stuff since high school english and it’s hurting my brain!
October 8th, 2009 at 10:43 pm Erica(Quote)
For your employment in TW? I think there are some helpful hints on the web somewhere.
October 22nd, 2009 at 11:45 am Cate(Quote)
I lived in Taiwan on/off for 35yrs. Miss it everyday but don’t have a uni degree so jobwise it’s over. Keelung has a great harbour, Tien Mou classy area, you will enjoy TGIFridays for the western food, definately learn to use chopsticks!
October 22nd, 2009 at 2:31 pm ozsoapbox(Quote)
35 years wow! Maybe that’ll be me one day.
When you say jobwise it’s over does that mean it’s hard to find ongoing work without a degree?
