So there I was, riding quietly along the Old Caoling Bikeway with the sun shining, a gentle breeze and the rolling waves of the ocean keeping me company.

I wsa pushing the 80km or so mark into the trip and on the home stretch of the bikeway, was gently rolling through Fulian Village up in Gongliao District in Taipei’s north.

From what little I saw of the village I figured it was mostly a fishing area and although I didn’t venture off the Caoling Bikeway to explore, got the feeling that I wasn’t missing much.

As I leaving Fulian Village though, I ran into this;

Looking kind of like a house or studio, but with no sign to indicate it was a business of some sort, the building was surrounded by a series of what looked to be handcarved statues

The statues on show seemed to be a bit random but definitely didn’t appear to be mass-produced or store bought.

You can see some unfinished projects in the back of the above photo.

This horse was out front and had it’s curiously detailed arse facing the street.

Again, I dunno what the deal was with this place but whoever sculpted the horse went to a lot of trouble to finely detail and exaggerate its anus!

Out front you had an old marooned fishing boat which added a bit of character to the place;

Anybody got any ideas? Nobody was around so we couldn’t ask.

It kinda looks like a studio but I suppose it could also just be somebody’s retirement home. Most old people in Taiwan seem to garden and farm in their retirement, perhaps these guys just really liked their art!

Whatever the story, the mysterious statues definitely provided a bit of character to the Fulian Village stretch of the bikeway.
