Hey England, prosecute cat hater Mary Bale already!
This story broke a few days ago and upon reading the initial reports in the early hours of the morning, I secretly hoped that fourchan or some other online vigilante group would get involved.
For those of you that came in late, so the story goes that Stephanie and Darryl Mann found their cat Lola sealed in a rubbish bin. The couple heard Lola meowing from the bin and came to her rescue.
Luckily the Mann household was equipped with a video security system and upon watching security footage, the couple witnessed one of the most brazen acts of animal cruelty I’ve ever seen.
Watch the footage for yourself;
What you’re looking at there is footage showing that fifteen hours before Lola was found, a middle aged woman walked by the Mann’s property, stroked Lola for a few seconds, calmly dumped her into the rubbish bin and then closed the lid and walked away as if nothing had happened.
In a bid to find the sick individual responsible, the Mann’s published their home security footage on Youtube in the hope that she would be tracked down.
Less then 24 hours later, the internet delivered.
The RSPCA were allegedly the first to uncover the mystery animal abuser but refused to go public with her identity. Nonetheless the police were notified and fearing public backlash offered the woman protection.
A short time later she was publicly named and shamed online as Mary Bale, a bank clerk from Coventry.
With her identity unmasked and insults and death threats flying left right and centre from all over the world, Mary’s mother, Celia came to her rescue. Celia insisted that
She’s my daughter and as far as I’m concerned she is the most caring person you could ever wish to meet. She loves cats.
She absolutely adores cats, she’s an animal lover, it just doesn’t make sense.
What?! Sorry but the only thing that doesn’t make sense is trying to claim Mary Bale loves cats. In the video footage you can clearly see her looking around to make sure nobody’s around before throwing Lola into the bin.
This is someone who knows what she’s doing is wrong and simply doesn’t care.
In response to the criticism levelled against her after she was identified, Bale stated
I really don’t see what everyone is getting so excited about – it’s just a cat.
I don’t know what came over me, but I suddenly thought it would be funny to put it in the wheelie bin, which was right beside me.
‘Just a cat?’ Yeah, clearly Mary Bale is someone who loves animals. Obviously she’s failed to realise the impact of her actions and nor does Bale appear to have any remorse or understanding of animal cruelty.
Despite the video footage and public outcry however, amazingly no arrest has been made yet. Police are claiming that ‘Ms Bale (has) not committed a crime‘.
Meanwhile the Animal Welfare Act of 2006 section 4 clearly states that
A person commits an offence if—
(a)an act of his, or a failure of his to act, causes an animal to suffer,
(b)he knew, or ought reasonably to have known, that the act, or failure to act, would have that effect or be likely to do so,
(c)the animal is a protected animal, and
(d)the suffering is unnecessary.
Seeing as the Act’s definition for a protected animal is simply ‘a vertebrate other than man‘, I’d this obviously covers cats.
Clearly the woman in the video footage is Mary Bale, so check on A.
How anyone could not know that putting a cat into a wheelie bin is going to cause it to suffer is beyond me, so check again on B.
Cats are a vertebrae so easily a check on C and the suffering incurred by someone putting a cat into a wheelie is obviously unnecessary so check on D too.
Now I’m not a detective but clearly this should be simply a case of
‘hi, are you Mary Bale?’
‘why yes.’
‘Is this you in this video?’
‘why yes’
‘right, off to jail with you then.’
The maximum penalty for breaching the Animal Welfare Act is up to 51 weeks of imprisonment or a fine of 20,000 pounds. Hell in this occasion I don’t see why they couldn’t enforce both.
Whether you’re a dog person or a cat person is irrelevant here. What we have is a clear case of animal abuse in which the perpetrator shows absolutely no regard for animal welfare by disposing of a cat in a rubbish bin.
There is no ambiguity about the suspects identity, she’s been recorded on video footage committing the act and according to the Animal Welfare Act there’s definitely a case to answer for.
So what are you waiting for England, haul this sorry excuse for a woman’s arse in already!
In a world where too much animal cruelty goes unreported this is one woman we can make an example of. If not, then what bloody hope do the rest of the animal kingdom have?

Open and shut case, yeah.
One thing I note: she obviously knows how to handle cats, as she lifts it by the back of the neck, which is generally the way to do it.

Evil old bat, stick her in a rotting dumster for 16 hours, should do the trick.

Daniel, you muppett
Someone should put you-and that evil old bag- in the bin together.
And also grab you by the scruff of the neck you low life scum bag, that poor little defenceless mite.

@yi
Because she was blatantly caught out and hasn’t been prosecuted yet. Despite the evidence against her, if we can’t get Bale prosecuted, what hope do all those other animals have?

Agreed – prosecute the evil woman already. The fact she doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about shows that she doesn’t think she did anything wrong. This woman obviously has issues and needs to be taught a lesson.

This is one sick pussy, sorry, puppy.
This woman obviously needs a major re-adjustment and tune up, wonder what she would have done if it were a smiling friendly young child sitting on the fence and watching the world go by, anyone think of that?

@Perth Cat Lover,
WTF?

I think Perth Cat Lover took offense to the holding a cat by the scruff of the neck comment. I must say full grown cats never look too comfortable when you hold them this way, I personally never do it.

Ah okay. Maybe I know less about cats than I thought I did.

Hey oz, did you see this one: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/mutilated-cat-found-in-sydney-garden-20100826-13sgh.html
Between these 2 stories, when i saw a cat when walking to the bus yesterday, my first thought, was “quick cat get inside before someone hurts you” instead of my usual, “awww cute kitty”. To me that is a sad day

Hey Yertle, nah I missed that one – don’t think it made it to the national news. I agree, it’s most definitely a shame if we start thinking primarily about animal welfare whenever we see one outdoors instead of just enjoying them.
Having said that I’m fully aware of the stigma in letting your cats run free outside so I’ve only ever kept indoor cats. Still by no means is it an excuse to harm them if they are outdoors killing things – that’s what the local catcher is for.

Hi,
Although I am not a cat hater I know of much worse that happens to cats. She placed the cat in the bin. She was not hateful in her body language which menas she relly doesn’t see what was wrong with her actions. Really, this can be.
I lived in a farming community for 10 years and although the farmers did not hate feral cats they treated them like any other animal in the fields, hawks, snakes etc. They left them to teir own life and fate. Their fate is usually to be accidentily run over by tractors or eaten by something bigger.
Many do not see hold a cat…or dog higher than a mouse. So, some people would never kill a mouse getting into their pantry. Some would. Shouldn’t we also be outraged at the suffering caused their? It is harsher and more hateful then the woman in the video was to the cat.
Does your opinion about cats mean more than other peoples? Why do you think she should get the max? Wow, I guess violent criminals should be gassed. Some people do not believe in hurting bugs. If your opinion should be the law maybe theirs should be too.
So, placing a cat in a bin without injury earns 51 weeks imprisonment and 20k Pound fine which means deliberately stepping on a bug is murder earning that act the death penalty or life in prison?
Dude, she was wrong and should be taught a lesson that will help her develope a compassion for animals not a penaly that will make her and others resort to poisening unwanted neighborhood anilmals.
You do more harm against animals with your unrealistic, fanatical view than you even realize.

If she didn’t see what was wrong with her actions, then why did she make a public apology?
Sorry but a cat on it’s owners property is massively different to farmers and feral cats. No point addressing this argument.
Most people kill mice with a trap and from what I understand this is (for the vast majority of instances) instant death. A cat being placed in a bin can starve to death slowly or worse, be crushed alive in a garbage truck.
I know which one outrages me more.
Because as a pet owner I draw the line at being unnessecarily cruel to pets versus pests. And yes, this extends even to cats or dogs.
We already have procedures in place to deal with pests, a quick call to your council and they will provide you with a trap to catch any animal that shouldn’t be on your property. We certainly don’t need to encourage people placing cats in bins.
Sorry, but how was the cat in this instance an unwanted neighbourhood animal? Anyone caught poisoning people’s pets deserves much worse than 51 week imprisonment and a fine.
As opposed to turning the other cheek when people place family pets on their owners property in rubbish bins;
Bravo.
