When it comes to Australia, it seems there is no end to Thailand’s generosity.
If it wasn’t bad enough Thailand had to put up with Australia’s male dropkicks stealing their women away, they have now taken it upon themselves to ensure Australian tourists who think they can do whatever the hell they want overseas and then get out of it, are dealt with appropriately.
Annice Smoel is currently out on bail in Thailand and is waiting to go to court over stealing a $60 bar mat which carries a maximum five year prison sentence. Her husband, Darren Smoel claims;
“This is a complete joke – the Thai authorities have no compassion and no respect for Western women or the wrongly accused, it’s just a joke.”
Well it certainly sounds harsh, but lets have a look at just what his western darling wife did to get herself into her current predicament.
- Annice Smoel is approached by an undercover cop in a Thailand ‘Aussie’ bar and is questioned over stealing a $60 bar mat.
- Smoel then abuses the undercover cop and then flees the scene.
- The police pursue Smoel whilst she attempts to lose them at the beach and eventually apprehend her.
- After being taken to a local police station, Smoel continues to abuse the Thai authorities – including the chief of police.
- Smoel is thrown into a jail cell overnight.
- Her family then attempt to bribe the police in exchange for her freedom. Thai police refuse the bribe, needless to say bribing police is illegal in Thailand.
- Smoel begins ‘I’m totally innocent, oh my god what is going on!’ routine to Australian media and her husband claims Australian government support is “nowhere near good enough”.
What do you think Rudd is just going to waltz on in to Thailand, throw a bit of Mandarin around and get your wife off scott free? Annice Smoel acted like a complete and utter jackarse and deserves everything coming to her.
Instead of just accepting this and apologising to everyone involved she’s going to drag it out and continue to play the innocent victim card. Well Annice, we all know how that played out for Michelle Corby now don’t we.
Australian tourists need to learn that just because they might come from the west that doesn’t entitle them to completely shit all over another countries laws and authorities and then cry at the government to get them out of it.
If I stole something, waltzed down to St. Kilda Road Police station abusing any police officer I saw, demanded to speak to Christine Nixon and then called her a big fat ugly slag cow I’d imagine I’d be looking at similar treatment by Australia’s authorities.
So Darren, why does your darling wife deserve our support again?
So glad am I that Thailand is stepping up the plate in dealing with Australia’s trash that I’ve emailed the Thai consulate asking if their government has a prosecution fund I can contribute to to keep trash like Annice Smoel out of Australia, even if it’s only for five years.
If they get back to me I’ll keep you posted but in the meantime, somebody grab Thailand a beer.

A believe the bar mats are like a touristy type thing, like a floor mat or something. From what I understand the bar sold them commercially and she tried to steal one.
She’s made up the story about how a friend put it in her bag and she has no idea how it got there… that didn’t work for Corby and it’s probably not going to work here either.

A bar mat is a toupe for the bar. It soaks up the beer sud spillage while protecting the wood/finish of the bar itself. They are often adorned with beer logos and such. I have a couple on my bar (Cough Alco Cough). Must keep an eye out now for a Thai beer version.

I heard on the radio today that Annice’s brother also jumped out to defend her. It was quoted that ‘the girls were a bit drunk and raised their voice, which was treated quite seriously as abusive in Thailand, if anything, I’ll apologise for the girls’… hmm… raise their voice hey?! AND why couldn’t she apologise for herself?!?!?!

I just got the latest on Ms Smoel today — she is now back in Australia. Thai police do not detain farangs without good reason. I am so glad that she was detained and deported because I am utterly sick to the teeth of western scumbags going to The Land Of Smiles and treating Thais like second-class persons in their own country. I regard it as a privilege to visit the wonderful Thai Kingdom and cringe when I see the behavior of bogans like this dork. I am an Australian by the way — but I love Thailand and Thais.

@ ozwhatox: thanks for your correction. I really wasn’t THAT into the story and perhaps mixed it up with her brother in law or whatever… I really don’t care! Plus, I never say her brother got on the radio, I said ‘I heard on radio that her brother jumped out…..’ I don’t know if he spoke to the radio or other media. Perhaps you can do more research on it for all of us!
